Older multicolor printers use one nozzle for every color. To switch, the machine has to purge the old filament out and push new filament through the same nozzle — often wasting more plastic than the actual printed object weighs.
The U1 sidesteps that entirely. It holds four separate toolheads, each with its own nozzle and its own filament already loaded and preheated. When the print needs a new color, the machine physically parks the active toolhead and swaps in the next one — a process that takes about five seconds, versus up to two minutes on a single-nozzle system doing the same job.
Because each nozzle stays dedicated to one material, there's very little to purge between swaps; Snapmaker's own figures put the waste reduction at up to 80% compared to conventional single-nozzle color-changing, and multicolor print times can drop by roughly five times. Those are manufacturer figures, not independently audited numbers, but they're consistent with the swap-speed math above.
This is the section most discount-code pages skip, and it's the one that actually helps you decide whether to buy.
vs. Bambu Lab H2C — The H2C costs significantly more ($2,399 vs. $849 for the U1) and uses a different approach: a nozzle-swapping "Vortek" system paired with Bambu's AMS filament units, which can support far more than four colors if you're already invested in that ecosystem. If you don't already own Bambu hardware, the U1 gets you clean multicolor printing at a third of the price.
vs. Bambu Lab X2D — This is the closer fight. In four-color, high-frequency swap tests, the U1 swaps in roughly 5–12 seconds against about 14 seconds for the X2D, with roughly half the purge waste (around 4g versus 8g). Where the X2D pulls ahead is engineering materials: its active chamber heats to about 65°C and works out of the box today, while the U1's optional Top Cover only reaches around 50°C passively and, as of this writing, isn't shipping until November 2026. If ABS, ASA, or PC are a regular part of your workflow, that gap matters more than the swap-speed advantage.
vs. Prusa XL — The Prusa XL uses a similar tool-changing concept with five heads instead of four, and a larger 360mm³ build volume, at its own price point. It's a reasonable third option if build volume matters more to you than the U1's tighter swap times.
The honest short version: if your prints are 1–4 colors and speed matters most, the U1 wins on both price and swap time. Also, to my knowledge, the U1 is the only multi-extruder machine that handles "mixing" colors to achieve custom colors thanks to the FullSpectrum software, now merged into the official Snapmaker Orca Slicer.
Compatibility depends on what hardware you've added:
• Basic setup: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PCTG
• With the Top Cover added: everything above, plus PET, ABS, ASA, PA, and PC
• With the Top Cover and hardened steel hotends: everything above, plus carbon-fiber- and glass-fiber-reinforced filaments
That tiered structure is worth paying attention to before you buy — if engineering-grade materials are the whole point for you, budget for the Top Cover (and possibly the hardened hotends) from the start rather than treating them as optional add-ons later.
The official Top Cover is currently priced around $149 on pre-order (down from an original $249), and as noted above, doesn't ship until November 2026. If you need enclosed printing sooner, the maker community has already produced a DIY alternative: 3D printed base for a cheap IKEA Samla box mod on MakerWorld. It won't look as clean as the official cover, but it solves the actual problem — a cold draft ruining a print — in the meantime.
Snapmaker built its own version of Orca Slicer, called Snapmaker Orca, with more than 80 pre-tuned material profiles baked in. Separately, an independent developer maintains an app called Printer Tools that adds remote monitoring — live bed-mesh visualization, full print history, per-toolhead temperature tracking, and camera access — on top of what Snapmaker ships natively.
Snapmaker isn't a new entrant experimenting with its first product — the company was founded in Shenzhen in 2016 and built its early reputation through crowdfunding, well before the U1 existed. In mid-2026 it closed a Series C funding round reported at roughly $140 million, described as the largest single raise the consumer 3D printing industry has seen, and by that point had reportedly delivered more than 100,000 U1 units. For a toolchanger specifically — a machine that's only as good as the ongoing firmware updates and spare-toolhead availability behind it — that kind of scale and funding is a genuinely relevant factor, not just a footnote.
Pros:
• Meaningfully faster and cleaner multicolor printing than single-nozzle machines, backed by independent swap-time testing, not just marketing claims
• No bulky external AMS-style box taking up desk space
• Backed by a company with real funding and delivery scale behind it
Cons:
• No laser or CNC capability — if you want a 3-in-1 machine, look at the Artisan instead
• The Top Cover is a separate purchase and, at time of writing, has a long lead time. But I 3D printed mine in combination with a cheap IKEA Samla box mod on MakerWorld
• Beyond four simultaneous colors or materials, you've hit the architectural ceiling — Snapmaker's own FAQ confirms there's no toolhead-expansion path, so heavy multi-material users may outgrow it
Dry your filament first. Wet PETG or TPU strings badly, and those strings can drag across the print and blend colors together.
Use a prime tower. Even with minimal purging, the printer still needs to prime each nozzle slightly on a toolhead swap — skipping the prime tower risks gaps in the print.
Mix materials deliberately. PVA dissolvable supports on one toolhead, TPU grips on another, and a structural PETG or PLA body on the rest is a common and effective combination.
Skipping the initial calibration. The resonance-compensation routine is what allows the printer to hit 500 mm/s without shaking itself apart — don't cancel out of it.
Ignoring firmware updates. Connect to WiFi and check for an update before your first serious print.
Touching the PEI plate bare-handed. Skin oils stop plastic from sticking. If it happens, wash the plate with warm water and mild soap and dry it fully.
